The 2025/26 Betway PSL kicked off on the weekend of the 9th and 10th of August.
There are 16 teams playing for the Kings of South African soccer, with Sundowns once against the favourites. The chasing pack is: Orlando Pirates, Kaizer Chiefs, Stellenbosch, Sekhukhune Utd, Golden Arrows, Richards Bay, TS Galaxy, AmaZulu, Polokwane City, Chippa Utd, Marumo Gallants, Magesi, SuperSport/Siwelele, Durban City, Orbit College.
Don’t be confused with some of the names and the complexities of South African soccer. Siwelele are in the top flight because of the sale of SuperSport United. Durban City and Orbit College are promoted, Cape Town City were relegated in the shock of last season and Royal AM were expelled by the league.

It does not look good for traditional giants Chiefs, whose odds don’t reflect the history of the club, but certainly reflect recent form.

- Kaizer Chiefs: double-digits (17.00).

- Value lane: Top-3/Top-4 markets for Chiefs/Stellies often price friendlier than the outright; but we suggest you track SA-book moves on Betway & Hollywoodbets pages.
In the PSL it has often been about the BIG ONE in Sundowns, given their dominance of the past decade, but we still talk Big Three and how to bet on them for probability and not possibility.
Mamelodi Sundowns are champions for eight seasons running; domestic juggernaut with CAF-level depth. The Angles: Win, Win to Nil, -1 AH, and team shots/corners when they pin sides.
Orlando Pirates are strong second favourites; league consistency plus cup pedigree. The Angles: Home Win vs bottom-half, BTTS No in control games; watch the Golden Boot holder Mabasa for anytime scorer.
Kaizer Chiefs are volatile, so be warned. There is an upside however, as they do perform in 50-50 clashes. Expect them ig-club volatility but upside; good spots are DNB/AH (0) in 50-50s and Top-8/Top-6 finish futures rather than title tickets.
How the Soweto Derby (Chiefs–Pirates) really behaves
It’s a monster matchup that skews tight and often low-scoring, with a rich history of cagey draws. The Practical angles are: Under 2.5 or a Draw.
The form guide is seldom a measurement here as history too often determines a closeness that the quality of each team doesn’t necessarily warrant.
We at Sporty Edge have to make a Top Five pick, but bear in mind this is done on previous data and not on any league form, as the league started a few days ago.
Who makes our Top 5?
- Stellenbosch — back-to-back top-three finishes recently; live Top-4 play and a credible long-shot outright ticket.
- Sekhukhune United — robust spine; profitable in BTTS No/Unders spots and they opened the season by shutting out Pirates.
- Siwelele — the new entity replacing SuperSport United’s slot; monitor price discovery first 6–8 GWs.
Promoted clubs & relegation picture
Promoted:
- Durban City — champions of the second tier; won their PSL debut this weekend.
- Orbit College — clinched promotion via play-offs, relegating Cape Town City.
Who stays up? Markets and previews naturally shade promoted sides and last-season strugglers (Richards Bay, etc.) towards the drop; expect Orbit and Durban City to be short in relegation pricing until they bank points.
Just one match in and Durban City looked organised (clean match-one win); Orbit may trade as a survival coin-flip until their attack settles. Richards Bay/Polokwane often sit near the danger band in model projections.
Golden Boot (Top Goalscorer) & Assists
Last season (2024/25) Golden Boot: Tshegofatso Mabasa (Pirates) – 16; Iqraam Rayners (Stellies) – 15; Lucas Ribeiro (Sundowns) – 12. T
These three headline our 2025/26 watchlist, with Peter Shalulile and Arthur Sales not to be discarded.

- Primary: split stake across Mabasa and a Sundowns forward (Ribeiro/Shalulile/Sales). Minutes + pens drive EV.
- Assists: follow creators in ball-dominant sides—Tashreeq Matthews (Sundowns) profiles well.

- 1X2 (Match Result): For short-priced giants, use Asian Handicap to reduce juice; Win to Nil for Sundowns is often a better price-to-profile fit.
- Under/Over Goals: PSL leans low-scoring relative to many leagues—Under 2.5 is routinely live outside heavyweight mismatches.
- BTTS / BTTS No: Defensive structures + pace control mean BTTS No trends for contenders vs bottom-half.
- Derby markets: Chiefs–Pirates often squeeze totals; build Draw + Under combos instead of guessing a side.

- Durban City — organised block, physical; target Unders in tougher away fixtures and Home DNB vs fellow strugglers. (Debut win backs the thesis.)
- Orbit College — adrenaline from play-off surge; watch first-month totals (likely Unders), then pivot to Draw/Draw-No-Bet in Rustenburg.
- Siwelele — new badge, inherited squad slot: price discovery phase; avoid big futures until at least five or six matches of data.
